Homemade spice blends can add wonderful flavor to your weeknight suppers, save you money, and will have lower sodium content than what you buy in the store. You can use them in soups, stir-fries, and so much more.
Making your own spices at home is really very simple. I know it’s very easy to just grab a little jar or packet from the grocery store, but the thing about making them from scratch is that you will know exactly what is going into your spice blend. All you have to do is measure and blend together and you can use them over and over again.
How to make spice blends at home
I will provide full instructions for each of the spice blends below, but here are a few instructions to follow to make the blends at home.
- Gather all of your ingredients, including the herbs and spices.
- Measure each ingredient out.
- Mix everything together, being careful not to let any moisture in.
- Pour the mixture into your own spice jar.
Spice Blend tips and suggestions
- Spices have expiration dates, so before you start, it’s always best to check the freshness and expiration dates because they start to lose their flavor. If there is outdated, it’s good to start with fresh spices.
- With home-made spice blends, they will be stored in the pantry for a year. So don’t make it in large batches. I use it quite frequently.
- I like to spend a little bit extra on my spice jars and label each jar with a nice label
- Using a mini funnel to pour your spices into your little jars makes life just a little bit easier. You don’t have to use a funnel, but it makes it a little less messy.
- I like to keep my spice cabinet stocked so that I can easily make any spice mix I might need. I will give you a list below of spices you might need. The list seems really long, I know this! But you probably already have quite a few of them in your pantry, and if you don’t, they are pretty expensive at your local grocery store or bulk store.
